Dark Lip Correction for Naturally Pigmented Lips
Devika has naturally pigmented, brownish-purple lips since her teenage years. With her wedding approaching, she wanted a subtle, natural-looking correction rather than a lipstick-red finish. This case study explores how her Fitzpatrick IV skin and cool undertone guided a carefully layered, two-session lip neutralisation and colour-building approach.
The Woman Behind the Photo
She is Devika.
At a family dinner with her fiancé’s relatives, an aunt asked her a simple question: “Beta, do you smoke?” Devika does not smoke. She never has. But her lips have looked this way since she was a teenager, and that one question stayed with her far longer than the aunt probably meant it to.
Devika meets her fiancé’s family during one of the many gatherings leading up to her wedding.
Devika, 27, works in marketing at a startup in Bangalore. She is quick, organised, and always five steps ahead at work, the kind of person who colour-codes her calendar. But in rooms full of new in-laws, all that confidence gets a little smaller.
She is engaged, with her wedding four months away. Her parents live in Ahmedabad, so she visits often, and her fiancé’s family lives there too. Between now and the wedding, there is dinner after dinner with people she is still getting to know. Aunts, cousins, family friends, all meeting her for the first time.
Her lips have been a deep brownish-purple since her teenage years. It runs in her family; nobody quite knows why. She never thought of it as a problem, lipstick covered it easily enough, and she has been putting on lipstick since college.
Devika balances a fast-paced marketing role with a highly organised routine.
The aunt’s question was gentle, not unkind. But Devika does not smoke, and being asked twice in one month felt different from being asked once. She started noticing her lips in every photo after that. In selfies. In the bathroom mirror. In the group photo from that same dinner, before anyone had touched up their lipstick.
Why She Came In?
She wanted to sit through a family dinner, bare-faced, without wondering if someone was looking at her lips. That’s when she considered PMU.
Devika did not want dramatic lips. She was clear about that from her first message to ibrow’s team. “I don’t want lipstick-red,” she wrote. “I want my lips to just look like mine, minus the dark colour.”
Her real goal was smaller than a wedding photo. She wanted to sit through a family dinner, bare-faced, without wondering if someone was looking at her lips. She wanted the same comfort on her honeymoon, in photos with no makeup and no touch-ups planned.
She booked her consultation during one of her regular visits home to Ahmedabad, and sat down with Sonal, her PMU artist.
During the consultation, Sonal assesses Devika’s natural lip pigmentation, undertone, and existing lip shape before choosing the correction approach.
What We Saw?
She had pigmentation on her lips, a dark brownish-purple, slightly deeper at the corners of the mouth.
Sonal looked closely at Devika’s lips before saying anything about colour. This is where a good consultation actually starts.
The pigmentation was even on both sides, a dark brownish-purple, slightly deeper at the corners of the mouth. It was not blotchy or patchy, just an even, natural darkness, present since her teenage years with no recent change. The shape of her lips was already good: a clear, well-defined border, and even natural volume. This was purely a colour concern. Nothing needed to be reshaped.
Devika had no history of smoking, no cold sores, no allergies to pigments or metals, and no previous lip PMU of any kind. Her skin type was Fitzpatrick IV, with a cool undertone and that cool undertone was the whole reason her lips looked the way they did.
Sonal examines Devika’s lips before beginning the first session, assessing the pigmentation and planning the neutralisation process.
Dark lips like Devika’s usually have a blue-purple tint sitting underneath the surface. Warm colours like yellow, orange cancel out blue-purple tones. This is simple colour theory, the same idea behind why a yellow-based concealer is used to hide a blue-purple bruise. Only after that blue-purple tint is neutralised can a nice, natural red tone sit on top and actually show.
What We Decided To Do
Sonal explained the plan in two sessions, ten weeks apart. Neutralise first, then build colour, not because it looks nice on paper, but because skipping ahead produces a flat, muddy result instead of a clean one.
- Every lip PMU case, regardless of colour formula, starts with the same pre-care: 4 to 5 days of daily lip scrubbing before the appointment (a lip scrub, or simply sugar mixed with glycerine or petroleum jelly), and moisturising several times a day with a plain, unscented lip balm through that same window.
- Good water intake for 48 hours before the procedure, and no alcohol in that window.
- On the day itself: no smoking, no lip makeup.
The Technique Behind the Plan
Session 1
Golden Yellow premium liquid pigment mixed with Ivory opacifier. This is the neutralising step, cancelling the purple-ish tinge.
Orange Crush premium liquid pigment mixed with Ivory opacifier building further warmth over the neutralised base.
Vivid Red premium liquid pigment for a small amount of tint.
That last red pass was a deliberate adjustment, not the textbook order. Sonal would normally save all red for the second session, once the neutralising work has fully settled. But skipping it here would have left Devika’s lips looking lighter, yes, but dull and flat for the ten weeks between sessions, right when she has the most family dinners on her calendar. A small early red pass kept her comfortable in the gap, without compromising the final result.
Session 2, ten weeks later:
Session begins after proper assessment and understanding of the skin.

Healing, Step by Step
Immediately after Session 1:
Devika’s lips looked bold, a warm, saturated tone, fuller and slightly swollen, a fresh just-done look.
Her naturally pigmented lips appeared warm and saturated, with temporary fullness and swelling immediately after the first session.
Over the following weeks
The colour settled and softened. By around ten weeks, the point where Session 2 was booked, her lips had healed into a light, slightly muted nude-pink tone. Noticeably lighter than her original dark colour, but a little flat and understated on its own. This was the base Session 2 would build on.
10 weeks later her lips healed into a muted nude-pink tone.
Immediately after Session 2
Layered on top of that healed base, her lips looked the boldest they had at any point in the process, a deep, saturated red-orange, fuller and slightly swollen again.
Immediately after Session 2, the lips appear deeper and more saturated as the second layer of colour is applied.
Over the following eleven weeks
That boldness settled into her final, healed colour.
The Result
Devika had brownish-purple tone and slightly deeper pigmentation around the corners of her lips. After the procedure, her lips appeared a natural, even muted red-brown lip colour with no change to the existing lip shape.
After the procedure, her lips had healed into a natural, even, muted red-brown tone.
Devika’s lips healed into a natural, even, muted red-brown tone. The same tone on both sides, soft and matte, nothing like the dramatic red she had been worried about at her first consultation.
At the next family dinner, nobody asked if she smoked. Nobody asked anything about her lips at all, which was exactly the point. On her honeymoon, she found herself in bare-faced photos without the small flinch she used to feel.
On her honeymoon, Devika could enjoy meals, photos, and time with her husband without worrying about constant lipstick touch-ups.
What This Teaches Us
1
Dark, pigmented lips usually need neutralising before tinting. Warm tones cancel cool, blue-purple undertones, the same colour logic used everywhere else in skin and makeup science.
2
Textbook-ideal sequencing sometimes needs a small, deliberate adjustment for a client’s real life. Sonal’s early red pass wasn’t the “ideal” order, it was the right call for a client with a in-law-dinner-heavy ten weeks ahead.
3
Well-shaped lips don’t always need shape correction. Sometimes the entire fix is about colour, and adding unnecessary shape changes would be solving a problem that was never there.
4
A two-session build allows colour to deepen gradually and safely, rather than pushing for a dramatic result in one heavy sitting.
5
Lip PMU pre-care is universal. Scrubbing, moisturising, hydration, and avoiding alcohol and smoking apply to every lip case, regardless of the pigment formula used.
