The permanent makeup industry is currently at a very nascent stage in India, compared to the actual potential it has. In a large country with so many people, permanent makeup can easily become one of the largest and most profitable industries. Right now, people are slowly learning and adopting it in selected cities, mostly the metros. People who are able to afford the treatments readily spend money on permanent makeup as it is unwashable. It is fair to infer that people happily invest in things that give them convenience and make them feel more confident all the time. 

When it comes to popularizing PMU in India, there is one special person who truly deserves a mention. Ahmedabad-based Dermatologist and Cosmetologist, Dr. Gunjan Shah has truly contributed a lot to creating awareness about permanent makeup in India. Dr. Gunjan Shah has been pursuing her passion for microblading & permanent makeup since 2013. It was a time when it was fully unheard of in India. Simultaneously, she continued with her main profession in dermatology and cosmetology besides providing permanent makeup services. 

After having more than 5 years of experience with permanent makeup, she decided to share her knowledge with others. She recalled the times when she was struggling to find good quality training in India. Realizing that there is a huge market gap, she took the initiative to bring high-quality and affordable PMU training programs to India, and make them more accessible to passionate people interested in learning this art. This is how the next important chapter in her journey began! In 2018, she started training people for Microblading & PMU under her brand name “Ibrow-permanent makeup”. 

But it was not enough. Dr. Gunjan Shah realized that people had reservations about PMU and there were lots of myths surrounding it. Clearly, there was a need for large-scale public awareness about permanent makeup. To make it possible, she collaborated with other like-minded microblading & PMU professionals to launch IAPMU (Indian Association of Permanent Makeup) in 2019. Because of her passion and dedication to this field, Dr.Gunjan was then elected by the elite group of professionals as the president of IAPMU. 

At around the same time, Dr. Gunjan Shah started working on another very significant project. She was working on developing effective alternatives to international PMU pigments. After having years of experience with permanent makeup, she observed that pigments manufactured by foreign companies were nothing more than kryptonite to Indian PMU artists. They were made to suit Caucasian skin types and were not very suitable for Indian and South Asian skin types. But as a practicing dermatologist and cosmetologist, she was soon able to find the perfect solution to the situation. She was successful in formulating her own line of professional PMU pigments and products. 

Everything was going according to plan until the pandemic hit the world in 2020. But even in that situation, she continued to do what she loves. While most PMU businesses were shutting down and people were at home, Dr.Gunjan Shah launched India’s first virtual learning platform for Permanent Makeup, in the form of ‘Ibrow academy’, which is available on Android, iOS as well as web. It was wildly successful and by Oct 2020, she restarted the in-person hands-on training due to the rising demand for education in permanent makeup. Following proper Covid protocols and integrating the online and in-person modules, she has been providing quality Microblading and Permanent Makeup training. 

Within a short span of 3 years, she has already trained over 320+ PMU artists hailing from 78 cities across 5 countries. These numbers are growing every week!! Her passion and hard work have helped her and many others build a lucrative career around microblading and permanent makeup.
