As PMU continues to become more and more popular, curiosity about various PMU techniques is natural. Many people confuse PMU with tattooing because of how it appears on the surface level. Although PMU techniques do have some sort of similarity with traditional tattooing, there are enough distinguishing features to separate the two methods from each other. In this blog we will tackle a very common question, “Is lipblush same as lip tattoo?”. Also, you will learn some interesting facts about lip blushing.
Key Differences in Techniques – Lip Blushing Vs Lip tattooing
The terms “Lip blushing” and “Lip tattooing” are often used interchangeably on the internet. In reality, there is a thin but clear line of distinction between the two. While one refers to cosmetic tattooing, the latter is actually used to describe the application of traditional body tattooing method on the lips.
Lip blushing is one of the modern Permanent Makeup (PMU) techniques that belongs to “Cosmetic Tattooing” category. Here, a PMU artist will use a special handheld machine (quite different from a traditional body tattoo machine) to deposit pigments just below the epidermal layer of the client’s lips. The goal is to make them look naturally rosy, pinky, or berry. The process is accomplished with the help of small needles that creates micro slices and cuts on the skin and fill in those with colors.
On the other hand, Traditional Body Tattooing method uses stronger machines and they release pigments deep into the skin. Also, the selection of hues are deeper, and more vibrant. It is also a little more aggresive on the skin, compared to cosmetic tattooing.
The Difference in Results – Lip Blushing Vs Lip tattooing
The sole purpose of lip blushing is to correct flaws and make the lips look naturally beautiful. The appearance of the lips can be enhanced by lip blushing to even create a lip-filler kind of effect.
The only difference between getting a lip blush and using an actual lip filler is that no change in the shape of the lips will occur in the former case. It is therefore safer in the long term. Lip blushing will simply correct the lips symmetry, color correct discolored or pigmented lips, and gives the illusion of a naturally flawless appearance.
Talking about lip tattooing, it is done using traditional tattooing method. There was a time when all cosmetic tattooing procedures used to be done with traditional equipment and pigments. But times have changed now.
Gentler PMU resources have been developed and now there is a clear demarcation between the two. The problem with traditional method is that, the colors used heavy and looks too dark for the face. Thus, the results appear very unnatural. In addition to that, the original tattoo machine would be much more difficult to control while working around the delicate mouth area.
Now that you know the difference, we assume that you’ll prefer not to traumatize your precious lips with a tattoo machine. Here are few more things you must know about lip blushing before deciding if it is right for you.
Is lip blushing a painful process?
Although the sensitivity and tolerance level varies between people, facing unbearable pain during any PMU process is a major red flag. The artist is supposed to use a topical numbing cream on client’s lips and proceed only when it has started working.
However, one might still feel the micro cuts made by the equipment’s needles since the skin on our lips is very thin and delicate. But it is no big deal. Under the right circumstances, the pain should not feel excruciating. Instead, they just feel like small scratches and pinches.
How long do lip blushing results last?
The lips will return to it’s natural color within 2-3 years. So if a person desires to maintain the results of lip blushing, retouching must be done from time to time. Usually, PMU artists recommend yearly sessions to their clients.
What factors will the determine the longetivity of lip blushing results?
The lip color will appear extremely bright when it is freshly done. It looks nothing like the intended color during the start. But by the time the healing process is complete, the color will lighten by atleast 30-50%. The expert will know how your lips should look at the beginning to finally get to the desired result.
The results will definitely fade sooner or later, but it typically lasts for 2-3 years in most people. But that also depend upon individual lifestyle choices. Factors such as sun exposure, smoking habits, iron deficiency, beauty or selfcare regimen, skin condition, etc can significantly influence the longevity of results.
What does the healing process look like?
Healing typically takes a total of 3-4 weeks. For the first 24 hrs, the client has to keep blotting their lips gently with a wet cotton pad and keep their lips dry. This is done to prevent the body fluids from accumulating on the lips and forming a scab. However, scabbing will eventually occur. The lips needs to stay moisturized and for the first few days, scrubbbling or picking the lips must be avoided. Also, going to the gym is to be avoided. Attention must be given to prevent the scabs from falling immaturely. Otherwise, those areas will lose it’s pigments. In about 3-4 weeks, the complete healing will occur and you might need a retouch appointment to check if the results have come out as intended.
Is lip blushing safe for everyone?
If you have underlying skin conditions such as cold sores, precancerous lesions, spots, herpes, autoimmune diseases, etc, you might need to either take some medications or avoid it altogether. The artist has to be aware of such information about the patient to avoid disasters and reactions.
