The straightforward answer to the question is, Yes! Permanent makeup is absolutely safe. In fact, it can be safer than your daily makeup items. Having an initial resistance toward permanent makeup is quite normal for anyone uninitiated toward the idea of getting a procedure done.
Almost everything new is seen with skepticism. But I am a practicing dermato-cosmetologist myself and I have already done PMU procedures on hundreds of clients in the past few years. You can hear it from me – PMU is completely safe and fail-proof, provided the artist is knowledgeable, skilled, and properly trained, and the material used for the procedures is of good quality.
Let me give some clear insights into the topic so that you can ultimately decide if you’d like to open up to the idea of trying permanent makeup.
The safety of permanent makeup mainly revolves around the following 4 factors: (please change the sequence of the following points as mentioned, based on their priority)
- Skills of the practitioner
- The quality of products being used
- Existing skin and health conditions of the client
- Cleanliness and hygiene of the PMU parlor/clinic
Let me go through each point one by one:
1. The safety of PMU depends a lot on the existing skin and health conditions of the client
Analyzing and enquiring about the existing skin conditions of the client is one of the most important steps and should not be neglected under any condition. If the client has skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis, PMU is prohibited. People with autoimmune diseases, inflammatory arthritis, etc are also not allowed to get a PMU procedure.
If you have any of the health and skin conditions described above, then unfortunately you won’t be considered fit for the procedure as the results can be really bad.
Carefulness is needed if the client’s skin is sensitive and prone to scarring/scabbing, allergies, infections, and so on. In this case, microshading is suggested as the process is less invasive.
2. The quality of products directly affects the safety of permanent makeup
Never compromise on the quality of products being injected into your skin. If you are unsure about the safety, you must ask your PMU artist to give you some information regarding the composition. If you are aware that you are allergic to any known metals and colorants, you should definitely say that. Nevertheless, the initial inquiry about your skin and health conditions should clarify such details. Although uncommon, ignoring these can lead to serious consequences on a fateful day.
3. Cleanliness and Hygiene of the PMU parlor/clinic are important for the safety of permanent makeup
One significant indicator of true professionalism is the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene inside the PMU parlor. As the procedures involve pricking your skin, you are more vulnerable to infections compared to a normal day. You need to be sure that the equipment being used has been sanitized and general medical and safety protocols are being followed in the parlor/clinic.
4. The safety of permanent makeup will depend directly on the skills and knowledge of the PMU artist
To be honest, the quality of results you get and the experience of getting some kind of a procedure done on you largely depend on the skills of the PMU artist. The experience of the person matters a lot. They should have a proper steady hand and they should have completed their training from a legit place. Therefore, you must research the PMU artist properly before even talking to them.
If you are contacting someone via social media, always make sure to get enough social proof about their previous work. You can go through their website and social media, contact past clients and ensure that you know what you are doing. Also, the artist must be willing to show you enough pictures of before and after.
Hopefully, you got some important pointers to decide whether you can also get a PMU procedure such as microblading, microshading, lip blushing, etc without any hidden risks. However, to get more specific information, it is advised to see your medical doctor.
